CLOUDY WATER

Why Is My Hot Tub Water Cloudy?

My water has been cloudy since the day I filled the tub, and my alkalinity or pH reading is high

Water with a high total alkalinity and/or high pH reading will become cloudy.

Solution: Lower your alkalinity to between 80–150 ppm and then ensure that your pH is 7.2–7.8, unless you are using Spa Marvel Water Treatment & Conditioner, in which case acceptable pH is from 7.2–8.2.

 

My water has been cloudy since the day I filled the tub, but my alkalinity and pH are normal

This is likely tannins or minerals in the water. This often occurs if the spa is filled with untreated water from lakes, from wells, and in various regions such as South Florida.

Solution: Shock the water with granular chlorine or bromine at the ratio of 30 grams (1 ounce) per 1,000 litres (250 gallons) of water. You may also use spa shock as per the directions on the package. Wait 24 hours, repeat application if necessary. Multiple applications may be required.

My water turned cloudy within 24 hours of bathers using the spa

This is likely dirty filters and/or bather overload. The introduction of hairspray, makeup, deodorant, human waste, body lotions, hair gel, cologne, and perfume are hard on the water and can clog filters, inhibiting filtration. Many of the contaminants introduced by bathers are so fine that they can also pass through the filter media, remaining in suspension and impairing water quality. Thoroughly showering before using the spa will help prevent this.

Remember: 4 people in your spa is the equivalent of 200 people in a swimming pool.

Solution:

  • Increase your filtration schedule to maximum for a day or two until the water clears.
  • Clean your filter — see How to Clean a Hot Tub Filter.
  • Shock the water with granular chlorine or bromine at the ratio of 30 grams (1 ounce) per 1,000 litres (250 gallons) of water. You may also use spa shock as per the directions on the package.
  • Use a water clarifying agent, available from your professional spa retailer.

A thorough filter rinse once a week, with a proper complete monthly cleaning, will suffice for most hot tub users. Keep in mind that the filter takes out whatever is put into the spa — it only takes one bather covered in body lotions to foul a clean filter.

My water turned cloudy without heavy recent use, and my alkalinity or pH is high

Same cause as above — water with a high total alkalinity and/or high pH reading will become cloudy.

**Solution:** Lower your alkalinity to between 80–150 ppm and then ensure that your pH is 7.2–7.8, unless you are using Spa Marvel Water Treatment & Conditioner, in which case acceptable pH is from 7.2–8.2.

My water turned cloudy without heavy recent use, and my alkalinity/pH are normal

This is often the result of minerals naturally occurring in the water beginning to oxidize and create off-coloured water, though it’s more commonly associated with a filter or filtration problem — worn or dirty filters, or insufficient filtration. Your filters can never be too clean, nor can you ever have too much filtration.

Solution:

  • Ensure sufficient filtration. Spas with low-volume circ pumps (sometimes called “hush pumps”) are designed to filter water 24/7. Spas with scheduled filtration should filter a minimum of 6–8 hours a day to maximize chemical performance. If you’re unsure of your system, consult your owner’s manual or your professional spa retailer.
  • Clean your filter — see How to Clean a Hot Tub Filter.
  • Shock the water with granular chlorine or bromine at the ratio of 30 grams (1 ounce) per 1,000 litres (250 gallons) of water. Wait 24 hours, repeat if necessary.
My water is persistently cloudy no matter what I try

If you’re struggling with recurring cloudy water despite trying the fixes above, check the following four things:

  1. Are your filters properly cleaned? (Soaked in a filter cleaner such as Spa Marvel Filter Cleaner prior to rinsing, so the media looks like new — not dingy, stained, or smelly.)
  2. Is your total alkalinity greater than 150 ppm, or your pH greater than 8.4?
  3. Is your spa programmed to filter water for a minimum of 4 hours per day?
  4. Do you struggle to maintain a sanitizer (chlorine/bromine) reading — added today, gone by tomorrow?

If you answered “no” to question 1, 2, or 3: that’s your cause — clean your filter, or lower your alkalinity/pH, or increase your filtration time (matching fixes above), then shock the water: granular chlorine or bromine at 30 grams (1 ounce) per 1,000 litres (250 gallons). Wait 24 hours, repeat if necessary.

If you answered “yes” to all of questions 1–3, or “yes” to question 4: your spa is likely harbouring a contaminant — mould, algae, fungus, or bacteria. This requires a full decontamination — see How to Decontaminate a Hot Tub.

FOAMY WATER

Why Is My Hot Tub Foaming?

My total alkalinity is below 80 ppm

Low alkalinity causes foamy water.

Solution: Balance alkalinity to 80–150 ppm.

My alkalinity is normal, but my total hardness is below 250 ppm

Water that’s too soft can cause foaming.

Solution: Increase hardness to 250 ppm.

My alkalinity and hardness are normal, but my filters aren't properly cleaned

Dirty filters are a common cause of foam.

Solution: Clean your filter — see How to Clean a Hot Tub Filter — and shock the spa water. After properly cleaning and reinstalling the filter, shock with granular chlorine or bromine at 30 grams (1 ounce) per 1,000 litres (250 gallons). Wait at least 24 hours. If foaming persists, rinse the filter with fresh water, shock again, and wait another 24 hours. Repeat as necessary.

My alkalinity, hardness, and filters are all fine, but I still have foam

This is likely detergents or other foreign matter in the water. Foaming can be caused by detergents, makeup, and hair products introduced by bathers. Residual detergent in bathing suits, soap residue on skin, shampoo residue in hair, body lotions, and hair products all dissolve in the water — when the aerators turn on, a bubble bath is created.

Some filter cleaning agents can also cause foaming — always ensure all detergent is rinsed from the filter media after soaking. Spa Marvel Hot Tub Filter Cleaner does not cause foaming. Low-grade spa chemicals (typically from big-box stores), and some fragrances or essential oils, can also cause foam.

Solution:

  • Quick fix: use a de-foaming agent from your spa retailer — instant results, but temporary.
  • To eliminate foam more permanently: shock the water with granular chlorine or bromine at 30 grams (1 ounce) per 1,000 litres (250 gallons). Wait at least 24 hours. If foaming persists, rinse the filter, shock again, and wait another 24 hours.
  • If foam persists, or you want it gone fast: drain and refill the spa — often less expensive, faster, and easier than chasing out the foam through other methods.

Going forward:

  • Minimize detergents by washing bathing suits without laundry detergent, and have bathers shower and rinse thoroughly before entering.
  • Use an enzyme-based product like Spa Marvel Water Treatment & Conditioner, which helps prevent and remediate detergent-based foaming.
  • Skip fragrances and essential oils in the water.
  • Rinse filters thoroughly after any filter-cleaner soak.
  • Use quality chemicals from a professional spa retailer.

MUSTY ODOURS

Why Does My Hot Tub Smell Musty?

The smell goes away within a few minutes of removing the spa cover

This is likely mould, algae, and fungus growth inside the spa cover. If the cover vinyl is cracked, ripped, or torn, water can enter and remain trapped. Similarly, a cover that’s become heavy over time is a sign it’s become water-logged. Water in the cover creates an environment hospitable to mould, algae, fungus, and even bacteria, causing musty odours that sit between the bottom of the cover and the water surface — and dissipate within a few minutes of removing the lid.

Solution: Clean the underside of your cover with a cover cleaner from your professional spa retailer. If the cover vinyl can be opened, clean inside of it too. Allow everything to dry completely before reinstalling. If the vinyl is torn, or the cover is heavy/waterlogged, replace it.

The smell doesn't go away when I remove the cover

This is likely dirty filters. Filter media becomes saturated with human waste and other contaminants introduced to the spa water, which can cause foul odours.

Solution: Clean the filter — see How to Clean a Hot Tub Filter — and shock the water: granular chlorine or bromine at 30 grams (1 ounce) per 1,000 litres (250 gallons).

CAN’T LOWER pH OR ALKALINITY

Why Won’t My Alkalinity or pH Reading Go Down, No Matter How Much I Add?

I keep adding pH/alkalinity reducer and the reading won't budge

Most test equipment shows 240 as the highest reading for total alkalinity, and 8.4 as the highest for pH. In many cases, your actual readings may be significantly higher than that. For example, if your actual readings were 400 and 9.0, you could add plenty of pH reducer and lower the true readings to 300 and 8.6 — but your test equipment will keep showing 240 and 8.4, because those are its display limits. You’ve made progress, but you can’t measure it while the true readings are still off the chart. This is more common in well water.

Solution: Persist. It may take a bottle or two of pH reducer and several days to see the reading finally start to move. Keep adding pH reducer until alkalinity reaches 150 ppm at most, then focus on lowering pH to at most 7.8 (8.2 if using Spa Marvel Water Treatment & Conditioner). If your readings are very high, consider using a small amount of muriatic acid instead of powdered pH reducer.

BUILDUP ON SPA WALLS

Why Is There a Sandpaper-Like Buildup on My Hot Tub Walls?

There's a rough, sandpaper-like or drywall-compound-like buildup on my spa walls

This is always a water-balance issue. When total alkalinity is greater than 150 ppm, or pH is greater than 8.4, calcium naturally occurring and dissolved in your spa water can come out of solution and stick to your spa walls, feeling like 80-grit sandpaper. Similarly, if your source water contains gypsum, it can come out of solution and stick to the walls, looking like drywall compound. Wiping it off will only cause it to reattach.

Solution: Lower alkalinity to at least 150, then, if necessary, lower pH to at least 7.8 (8.2 if using Spa Marvel Water Treatment). Once balanced, wipe the buildup off — it will be absorbed back into solution. To avoid manually wiping, you can lower alkalinity to zero, leave the water alone for 24 hours, and the buildup will come off on its own. Then bring alkalinity back up to 80–150, or change the water and start over.

FLAKES IN THE WATER

What Are the White Flakes in My Hot Tub Water?

I see flakes that look like pieces of skin or tissue paper in my water

This is indicative of white mould in your plumbing. White mould is an airborne spore that can thrive in areas left damp — garden hoses, dehumidifiers, sump holes, children’s bathtub toys, hot tub filters left outside and reinstalled while not completely dry, swimming pools, and hot tubs. It can be introduced during manufacturing wet-testing, from a garden hose that developed mould while lying in the sun, or drift in while the lid is open. It can persist for months or years kept at bay by conventional sanitizers, but if you go an extended period without adding chlorine, it can proliferate to a noticeable point — often 6–8 weeks before you notice it. White mould won’t hurt you, but left unattended it can overwhelm your spa.

Solution: This requires a full decontamination — see How to Decontaminate a Hot Tub. Note: the chlorine will kill the white mould so it stops growing, but it won’t make the existing flakes vanish. After 72 successful hours: remove and clean the filter, run a plumbing cleaner (e.g., Spa Marvel Cleanser) through the system, drain, then refill with the clean filter installed. When you fill the spa, turn all jets on — if you see a lot of flakes come out of the plumbing, drain and fill again. A few flakes will be picked up by your filter or can be removed by hand or with a net.

COLOURED WATER

Why Is My Hot Tub Water Green, Yellow, Brown, or Orange?

My water is clear but has a tinge of colour

This is a naturally occurring phenomenon caused by minerals in the water oxidizing (rusting). It’s typically green or yellow, but can occasionally be brown or orange. The coloured water isn’t harmful — it just looks odd.

Solution: Shock the water with granular chlorine or bromine at 30 grams (1 ounce) per 1,000 litres (250 gallons). Wait a minimum of 24 hours. If the colour persists, shock again and wait another 24 hours. Repeat as necessary — multiple applications may be required.

Note: the colour may become more intense right after shocking, sometimes visibly — this is the shock oxidizing the minerals. If this happens, leave it alone and wait 24 hours; the colour will be greatly reduced if not cleared completely. Adding fresh water later will reintroduce minerals, so the coloured water may recur.

TAR-LIKE SUBSTANCE AT THE WATERLINE

What Is the Tar-Like Residue at My Hot Tub’s Waterline?

There's a tar-like buildup forming around my waterline

This is caused when total alkalinity is below 80 ppm and/or pH is below 7.2. Low readings mean the water has become acidic, and acidic water degrades rubber in the spa plumbing — o-rings, pump seals, and jet gaskets. As the rubber degrades, it builds up around the waterline as a tar-like substance.

Solution: Increase total alkalinity and pH to within acceptable ranges. To remove the existing buildup, lower the water level a couple of inches (5 cm) below it, and use a gentle solvent on a cloth to remove it — being careful not to spill solvent into the spa water. Use another cloth to remove the solvent from the acrylic, then top the spa back up.

HOT TUB RASH

Why Do I Get a Rash From My Hot Tub?

I get itchy calves, an itchy back, or a rash and my pH or alkalinity is low

Low pH and/or low alkalinity are signs the water is acidic. Acidic water can cause mild irritations in some people — generally itchy calves and backs — but in others it can cause severe rashes.

Solution: Maintain pH and alkalinity in the recommended ranges: total alkalinity 80–150 ppm, and pH 7.2–7.8 (7.2–8.2 if using Spa Marvel Water Treatment & Conditioner).

I get a rash in other pools and spas too, or can't shower in high-chlorine cities without a reaction

You may have an intolerance to common spa chemicals such as chlorine, bromine, or non-chlorine shock (potassium monopersulfate). Non-chlorine shock in particular can cause severe burns and rashes in some people — while rare, the reaction resembles contact with poison ivy.

Test for it: the Band-Aid test. Mix some of the chemical you want to test into a small vessel at the same ratio you’d add it to your spa, moisten the pad of a Band-Aid with a sample of that water, apply it to your skin for 2 hours, then check for a reaction.

Solution: Try switching chemicals — e.g., chlorine instead of non-chlorine shock, or bromine instead of chlorine, and vice versa. Alternatively, use products like Spa Marvel Water Treatment & Conditioner, or equipment like ozonators and UV lights, which clear the path for sanitizers — meaning less chlorine/bromine is needed to maintain your desired readings.

Multiple people using the spa are getting a rash, or my spa is chlorine-resistant to bacteria

Bacteria can cause hot tub rash and usually affects multiple bathers — a brand-new spa isn’t automatically bacteria-free. Bacterial infections are often caused by poor sanitation practices, though some chlorine-resistant bacteria (such as pseudomonas, which causes hot tub folliculitis) can be difficult to eradicate.

I take medication and get a rash after using the hot tub

Some medications can cause hot tub rash when soaking in hot water — this is particularly the case with some heart medications.

Solution: Consult your physician to see if your medication may be causing the rash.

I only get a rash when the water is very hot

An intolerance to hot water itself can cause rashes in some people.

Solution: Operate your spa at a lower temperature — ideally below body temperature, such as 98°F or less. Use the spa for shorter durations, and take a cool shower upon exiting.
